Decoupage Coasters

Decoupage is one of the most famous crafts among the women. I guess its fame is coming mainly from three reasons; it is very easy to craft, you do not have to have too much talent to make it and the final products are usually useful for the daily life.

In my previous posts Crafts: General Info on Decoupage and Upcycling Coffee Mate Containers, I have tried to give some information on the materials needed for decoupage and a brief info on how to decoupage. You will remember that you do not have to be as talented as Picasso as I am clearly not, yet I can decoupage on many surfaces.

Speaking of me and my decoupage skills, I would like yo share my first attempt to decoupage on wooden coasters. As an addict of seashells and all tones of color blue, I have tried my favorite theme; underwater. Let me tell you all the details on how to decoupage on wooden objects.

How to Decoupage on Wooden Objects?

I have bought these coasters as plain wooden objects. They were ready for painting, no need for sanding or anything else. If you have a wooden object that needs to be sanded, you will have to sand and clean all the surfaces before the next stage.

Before the decoupage, you will need a light background. So I started with painting all the surfaces with acrylic white paint. I kept painting until I see a clear white surface. 2 or three coats would be enough. The important tip is to wait for each coat to dry completely.

Then, I have painted all the surfaces to blue. Again, I had to paint them for 2-3 coats.

I have used decorated tissues for the decoupage. There were two different background colors, light blue and yellow. I had to use both of the images which eventually led to a different finish as you can see from the pictures.

The tip for decoupaging decorated tissues is using only the top layer as they usually comes in 3 or 4 layers.

After I have glued the surface by any decoupage glue (we unfortunately do not have Mod Podge everywhere in Turkey), I have carefully placed the tissues on the coasters and I used a dry fabric to smooth the tissue and to make sure that there are no bubbles below the tissue. When the glue dried completely, I have applied some more glue on the tissue to strengthen it.

When they are all dry, I have applied two coats of vernish on the surfaces to seal my work. Water based vernishes are better for your health. So, consider using them on mainly the objects that you will use in the kitchen.

They were all ready and dry by the next day and here is the result as serving for its purpose.

I have decupaged three sets of these coasters and I have gifted them to my beloved ones. I should buy another set to decoupage for myself only.

This was all for today. I hope you find this post helpful and explanatory. In my next post about decoupage, I will give you some extreme examples of decoupage. I am pretty sure that it is going to be a highly inspirational post.

Love,
